Workshop/Course Description: “SIGHT TRANSLATION STRATGIES: Documents Legal? When?”
Have you ever struggled with your sight translation skills in ASL? If so, this workshop is for you!
Sight translation is the process of translating a printed text in English into ASL, which poses several challenges in this task. This workshop will provide a general understanding of how to apply sight translation techniques such as figurative language, lexical meanings, rules of ASL grammar and articulation.
In-depth focus will enhance participants’ ability to communicate information and ideas through signs, gestures, classifiers and fingerspelling so that a person who is monolingual would have the same accessibility to understand a printed legal document in English.
Workshop activities will include using various legal documents and/or forms that may/can be used in any interpreting settings. Participants attending this workshop will be surely entertained!
Workshop/Course Description: “Adults vs Juveniles: Different – How?”
This workshop is designed to show an interpreter the progression of the juvenile justice system from its infancy to the present day procedures. Some of the topics to be discussed are: the history of juveniles in adult courts; Juvenile Court Act and its legacy; reform cases; adult and juvenile Constitutional rights; the comparison of legal terms used in adult and juvenile procedures; the arrest procedure for a juvenile & how it differs from adults; custodial interrogation; the juvenile justice process and more.
