Betty was born June 11, 1945, in Fort Worth to J.C. and Alice Grimland and was a longtime Fort Worth resident. Being born to deaf parents, she was involved with the deaf community at an early age and became a certified interpreter. She would interpret for clients at schools, courts, doctors’ offices and in delivery rooms, which she enjoyed the most. Betty also worked for the Army Corps of Engineers.
Betty enjoyed several arts and crafts which included quilting, sewing and scrapbooking. She was an avid reader. Betty enjoyed traveling with her husband, Carl. They traveled all over the United States and to several countries, including Canada, China and England.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Carl DeVries.
Survivors: Daughters, Jan Kunkel and husband, Ron and Mary Davis and husband, David; grandchildren, Tamra McDonough and husband, Ian, Austin Davis and Dylan Davis; future great-granddaughter, Vera; sister, Frances Grimland; and many loving family members and friends.
For those of you who never had the opportunity to meet her, Betty was a staple in the Deaf community and had served as an interpreter most of her life. She was part of Hired Hands’ original team and continued that service until her retirement in 2013. She was an ally and a friend to so many people in the community and acted as a mentor and role model to many interpreters and students.
She will be greatly missed!
Her family has asked us to share information about her services (see below). Hired Hands will be providing interpreter/s.
