FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Texas School for the Deaf Receives Highly Respected
Barbara Jordan Media Award

(AUSTIN) – Texas School for the Deaf’s (TSD) 2019-2020 annual report has been selected for a Barbara Jordan Media Award by the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD).

The GCPD’s Barbara Jordan Media Awards program focuses on accurate and positive reporting on individuals with disabilities, using people first language and respectful depictions. A panel, including media professionals and people with disabilities, collectively score and select nominations in various categories including print feature, print pews, and photojournalism.

Shawn Saladin, TSD Governing Board Vice President who once served on the GCPD, says “this is an extreme honor for TSD.”

Known as a remarkable orator who broke barriers and built bridges, the Barbara Jordan Media Awards are named in honor of the Houston native and U.S. congresswoman who gained recognition and a place of honor in history.

TSD Superintendent, Claire Bugen, says “we aim to showcase what deaf students can achieve with a community focused on their abilities rather than their disabilities, and we are proud this achievement has been recognized.”

GCPD and the Texas A&M University Department of Communication, Journalism Studies created a virtual awards program to honor the winners and highlight their outstanding work.
