Workshop Description:

Document Sight Translation is a new skill that all of us need to practice.

This hands-on workshop will offer strategies for document translation, with an added benefit of providing a foundation for immediate text analysis.

Target level will be Intermediate to Advanced. Participants at other skill levels are allowed to register and participate, but instructional targets and workshop content will be at the aforementioned level.

We may not think about it, but consider the following documents and how each one could become testimony for the courts: medical history, employment application, custody forms, guardianship forms, consumer credit forms, signed affidavits, government forms, a Quicken program, an e-mail that corporate accountants prepare are often used by the corporate legal department for employee litigation cases.

The key to effective and efficient sight translation is to:

* Identify Demands and Controls in Sight Translating

* Incorporate ASL Expansion Techniques as much as necessary based on the consumer?guage preference and bicultural/bilingual familiarity.

* Self-monitor for any miscues or interference using Kohlberg’s 6 stages of Moral Development

The workshop will offer practice opportunities to interpret documents from disciplines such as: Education Law, IEPs, Medical Contracts and Agreements, Consumer Rights, Employment Litigation, Custody, Guardianship, Parental Rights, Divorce/Separation, Wills/Trusts/Estates, Business Law, and documents used in court proceedings to mention a few. The workshop is designed for sight
translation and includes court documents. Anyone who needs to interpret documents, handouts, forms, contracts, or affidavits will benefit from the techniques offered in this workshop.

For VRS interpreters – The presenters will also address questions about how to deal with the translation of letter documents over VRS, and related issues in VRS inherent to the uniqueness of the VP compared with doing it live.
