2008 GRADUATING CLASS CELEBRATES ACHIEVEMENTS AT TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE
DEAF

Austin, Texas – June 5, 2007 Today at 7:00 PM, graduates from the
Texas School for the Deaf’s (TSD) Class of 2008 receive their
diplomas and celebrate their achievements among friends and family
during commencement ceremonies in the R. L. Davis Auditorium at 1102
South Congress Avenue.

Esteemed alumna, professional actress, rights advocate, and inspiring
role model, Dr. Bobbie Beth Scoggins, returns to the podium at TSD
tonight delivering the keynote address to impart wisdom and advice for
success beyond high school to these emerging leaders. Dr. Scoggins was
valedictorian at the Texas School for the Deaf in 1973.

Dr. Scoggins, president of the National Association of the Deaf
(NAD), earned her BA in Psychology and Masters in Administration and
Supervision from California State University at Northridge, and holds
a Doctorate of Education in Institutional Management from Pepperdine
University’s School of Education and Psychology. Prior to being
elected NAD President in 2006, Dr. Scoggins was the Education
Cabinet’s Executive Director for the state of Kentucky’s
Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and served as the NAD
Region II Board representative. Though Scoggins has appeared on Oprah
and is well known for having performed the lead role as Sarah in
Children of a Lesser God in theatre productions across the U.S. and on
Broadway, Scoggins has accomplished milestones in business,
government, education, advocacy and leadership. In California,
Scoggins founded a recovery center for the deaf for alcohol and drug
abuse. Her passion for sports landed her positions with the U.S.
Olympic Committee and the U.S.A. Deaf Sports Federation, leading U.S.
Team Delegations to Deaflympic and Pan Am Games. Scoggins also serves
as a Vice President for America’s Athletes with Disabilities. Claire
Bugen, TSD’s Superintendent says “it is inspirational for these
students to see a TSD graduate rise to prominence in such a variety of
fields. In her current position as president of NAD, she represents
the interests and concerns of all deaf Americans. If she can do that,
then what future accomplishments await this graduating class?”

Texas School for the Deaf, located in South Austin, is the oldest
continuously operating publicly funded school in Texas. Opened in 1857
with only four students, the campus now serves students ages 0-22, and
provides outreach and educational resources for deaf students, their
families and professionals in the field throughout the state of Texas.
With educational excellence and a strong belief in a culture and
community that allows students to form a unique identity based on
their individual strengths and talents, rather than their
disabilities, TSD is an environment where students learn, grow, and
belong. For more information about the Texas School for the Deaf,
