Deaf Woman Goes to Austin as State Delegate!

Fort Worth, Texas: As the Texas State Democratic Convention convenes
Friday, June 6, in Austin, Tracey Michol will be among the delegates
in attendance. Ms. Michol is deaf and was elected by members of
Precinct 1296 in Senate District 10 to represent them at the State
Convention. Ms. Michol is now campaigning for a national delegate
position to the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado, in
August, which will be determined at the State Convention.

“This is like a dream come true!” signed Ms. Michol. “It
hasn’t been easy, and there have been challenges each step of the
way, because interpreters were not readily available.”

Ms. Michol explains, “The communication barrier is a huge one to
cross. I was fortunate. I had the support of my Precinct Captain,
caucus attendees, campaign and party staff, volunteers who knew some
signs and professional interpreters, who also volunteered to interpret
for me. They have helped make this possible for me, the deaf
community, and people with disabilities overall. I want to show that
we all have abilities and that we all benefit when they are put to
good use.”

Ms. Michol is hoping to be elected by her district to represent them
and the Great State of Texas at the National Convention in August. She
is campaigning for votes and planning a fundraising campaign. All
delegates are responsible for their own expenses. With the help of
Tracey and Friends, which are grass root’s supporters, no budget,
but lots of heart and talent, a blog is in the making at
http://traceymichol.wordpress.com
. It includes a signed video presently on YouTube. Ms. Michol hopes
to bring more people with disabilities into the political process.

Ms. Michol received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business
Administration from Gallaudet University in Washington D. C. and her
Masters Degree in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education from Lamar
University in Beaumont, Texas. For more information, please visit

“I hope to build bridges for others to cross and open doors for
others to enter.”
