Join NAD and NTD for Bernard Bragg’s 80th Birthday Bash!

Posted September 9, 2008

SILVER SPRING, MD – Join us for an extraordinary evening on
Saturday, October 4, 2008, for Bernard Bragg’s 80th Birthday Bash,
at Gallaudet University’s Kellogg Conference Center! This unique
celebration and fundraiser is being organized by and will benefit the
National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and the National Theatre of the
Deaf (NTD). A similar event will be held in Los Angeles that will
benefit the NAD and Deaf West Theatre.

Take a video “walk” through Bernard’s distinguished career as
performer, playwright/director, artist, and poet as you mix and mingle
with friends and colleagues during pre-dinner cocktail hour at 6 pm,
followed by a delicious buffet banquet at 7 pm, complete with birthday
cake. Cameras at every table will allow for group photos that will be
included in a keepsake album, for Bernard to cherish for many more
years to come.

You’ll be captivated by Stephen Weiner, Gallaudet provost and emcee
for the post-dinner program, as he provides enlightening tidbits and
orchestrates the “roasting” of Bernard by Bobbie Beth Scoggins,
NAD president; Jane Norman, Gallaudet professor and media expert;
Taras Denis, longtime friend; Harvey Corson, NTD board chair and
former NAD board member; and John Basinger, one of the NTD originals.
Welcoming remarks will be provided by Nancy J. Bloch, NAD chief
executive officer; Aaron Kubey, NTD executive director; Robert R.
Davila, Gallaudet president; and T. Alan Hurwitz, National Technical
Institute for the Deaf (NTID) president. Special entertainment will be
provided by Rathskellar.

Sponsorship for this event has been generously provided by
Communication Service for the Deaf, CSDVRS, Gallaudet University,
National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Powered by Purple, and
Rathskellar.

Event tickets are $80 per person, of which $25 may be counted as a
tax-deductible donation. To purchase event tickets or make a donation,
click here for Event Flyer and RSVP/donation form. Event RSVP forms
with payment must be received at the NAD no later than September 30,
2008.

About NAD

The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was established in 1880 by
deaf leaders who believed in the right of the American deaf community
to use sign language, to congregate on issues important to them, and
to have its interests represented at the national level. These beliefs
remain true to this day, with American Sign Language as a core value.
As a nonprofit federation, the mission of the NAD is to preserve,
protect, and promote the civil, human, and linguistic rights of deaf
and hard of hearing individuals in the United States of America. The
advocacy scope of the NAD is broad, covering the breadth of a lifetime
and impacting future generations in the areas of early intervention,
education, employment, health care, technology, telecommunications,
youth leadership, and more. For more information, please visit

About NTD

Founded in 1967, the National Theatre of the Deaf (NTD), a fully
professional ensemble of Deaf and Hearing actors, is one of the most
highly regarded theatre companies in America. The Tony-Award winning
National Theatre of the Deaf is the oldest continually producing and
touring theatre company in existence in the United States. NTD speaks
with two voices; one for the ear, another for the eye. By combining
the spoken word with sign language, the National Theatre of the Deaf
created a dual language theatre art form. The visual imagery inherent
in sign language, when magnified for the stage, has the effect of also
magnifying the spoken word. The English language is suddenly expanded
to include the visible shapes of words and ideas as they are being
spoken on stage by the actors. For more information, please visit
