Deafness Resource Specialist (Lubbock, Texas)

Position Description:

The Deafness Resource Specialist is responsible for connecting the
deaf and hard of hearing consumers with appropriate human service
providers within the appropriate region of responsibility. In
addition, the Regional Specialist will provide information and
training to service providers to enhance & culturally appropriate
services by acting as a resource center.

Essential Functions:

Serve as a liaison between the deaf and hard of hearing consumers and
the

service providers (i.e. state agencies, nonprofit service providers,
city and

county offices, federal agencies, law enforcement agencies, courts,
school

systems, institutions of higher education, private businesses,
service

organizations etc)

Identify referral needs of consumer and provide training information
to service

providers

Contact the resources and provide referral information, as well as,
culturally

appropriate programming information

Attend deaf and hard of hearing meetings, conduct hall meetings, and
one on one

meeting(s) to assess needs

Develop a good understanding on how the state agencies and other
human service

providers work in Texas and with the system.

Knowledge of ADA and federal/state laws required

Knowledge of IDEA, Early Childhood Intervention regulations,
Certificate of

Deafness which may be used for a tuition waver to a state supported

post-secondary school in Texas and the STAP program.

Knowledge of vocational rehabilitation regulations and procedures

Outreach to identify new consumers

Track consumer satisfaction regarding referrals and follow-up
accordingly

Maintain DB1 reports

Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

* Bachelor degree in related human service field or equivalent
experience required

* Must be able to communicate effectively with deaf and hard of
hearing individuals and demonstrate the ability to advocate the rights
of these individuals.

* Must have knowledge of telecommunication equipment devices for deaf
and hard of hearing consumers

* Ability to effectively foster good public relations within the
community.

* Knowledge of deaf culture and resources related to deafness

*Experience and skills in making public publications

* Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows software (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Outlook)

* Must have own transportation and be willing to travel

Note this is an extended year contract-funded position covering a
regional service area of which travel is required.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications
