Pretorius, surgical mechanic

Frankenstein: The Trouble Puppet Show is a dark, funny, smart, spooky work
of puppet theater, adapted from Mary Shelley’s classic novel by Trouble
Puppet’s Artistic Director, Connor Hopkins. Influenced by the vast array of
previous adaptations and incorporating a mix of history and natural
philosophy, Trouble Puppet spins a tale of steampunk science that escapes
from an abandoned Romanian asylum and chases all the way to the French
Revolution.

Reviews of Trouble Puppet’s most recent production, The Jungle

* “less like a work by Henson, and more akin to something by Eisenstein or
Tarkovsky” (Austin Theater Examiner, Ryan E. Johnson)
* [It succeeded] “at an awesomely high level of sophistication, in terms of
its storytelling.” “downright breathtaking . . . succeeding—without ever
even looking like it’s trying—on levels most Austin productions don’t even
attempt to reach.” (The Austinist, Dan Solomon)
* “A sepia-tinted tone poem, made hauntingly human by puppets of paper and
string . . . The Jungle . . . is not without humanity. And as happens with
great puppeteering, it comes from figures who aren’t even flesh and blood. .
. . In these moments and others, we stop seeing the hands that masterfully
work these figures or the immobility of their features. We see only the
tender fires of their human hearts, struggling to stay lighted against a
cold, cold wind.” (Austin Chronicle, Robert Faires)
