Indiana School for the Deaf cancels football game

Indianapolis – The Indiana School for the Deaf has canceled its football
game Saturday at Maryland School for the Deaf. The move comes after several
team members and coaches were disciplined.
It’s unclear what happened on the field or after a game between the Indiana
School for the Deaf when it played a football game in Austin, Texas last
weekend against the Texas School for the Deaf, but it did result in actions
taken against the Indiana team.
School officials didn’t respond to repeated requests for an on-camera
interview, but confirmed to our partners at The Indianapolis Star that there
was an incident that led to the cancellation of a game between the Indiana
School For The Deaf and a Maryland team.The school says that the incident
was reported to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services.
The school’s athletic director said that an investigation found no evidence
of a sexual assault and that coaches were disciplined along with a few
players for various behavior including vandalism.
The school also declined to provide details about what happened, the numbers
of players involved, their ages and the punishment handed down. However, two
assistant coaches were removed from their positions on the team.
The superintendent for the Texas School for the Deaf issued a statement
saying that the incident that occurred on the Texas School for the Deaf
campus did not include TDS students, adding that “we are confident that
officials at Indiana School for the Deaf are managing this situation.”
Whatever happened, it follows incidents involving inappropriate behavior
that led to disciplinary action and criminal charges against four Carmel
High School basketball team members earlier this year and recent sanctions
against coaches and players on the Hamilton Southeastern football team.
