TJC ITP is sponsoring Brandon Morgan’s workshop “Navigating the Cold Waters
of Frozen Legal Text” Saturday, October 1, 2011 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Legal
ceu’s pending approval. While it is targeted to certified and legal
interpreters, students will learn as well.

Workshop/Course Description: Some of the most commonly encountered legal
texts can sometimes be the most difficult to interpret, among these are
Miranda Warning and guilty plea litany. Having a prepared interpretation and
deeper understanding of these routine texts are powerful tools the legal
interpreter can use to increase effectiveness in communication.

In this session, participants will learn various strategies for extracting
embedded information and making it explicit to deaf suspects. Additionally,
the implications of the recent Supreme Court decision regarding Miranda
Rights will be examined. Through language models and text analysis, workshop
attendees will gain confidence in developing a conceptually accurate and
culturally appropriate interpretation of these common frozen legal texts.

Students with student ID – $25 until September 26, 2011

Others $40 until September 26, 2011
