Obituary: Judy Ann Barnes

Judy Ann Barnes was born in Nacogdoches on Feb. 15, 1950, and passed
away in The Hospice of East Texas on Sunday, July 22, 2012. She was
preceded in death by her father; brother, Travis W. Barnes. She is
survived by her mother, Doris Birdwell Barnes, Tyler; her aunt, Louise
Barnes, Pasadena; and numerous cousins.

Judy was a graduate of Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo., and
received her doctorate from East Texas State University in Commerce
(presently Texas A&M University at Commerce). She taught at Cushing
Grammar School and Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches before joining the
faculty of Tyler Junior College, where she taught for 20 years. After
teaching reading for several years, she began the Interpreter Training
Program for sign language interpreters, where she was the department
head until her retirement in May, 2008. She was also an integral part
of the Deaf Ministry at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler.

Judy was very devoted and committed to the deaf community. She had been
a beloved teacher, mentor and friend to all who knew her. She was an
artist, and also composed the music and words to numerous songs that
expressed her faith in Jesus Christ.

Family will serve as pallbearers.

Services will be held at Dickie Allen Funeral Home Chapel at 11 a.m. on
Wednesday, July 25, in Cushing with the Rev. Tim Roberts of Green Acres
Baptist Church, Tyler, officiating. Burial services will follow in
McKnight Cemetery, Cushing. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 25,
from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.

University Blvd., Tyler, 75701; or The Dr. Judy Barnes Honorary
Scholarship for the Sign Language Interpreter Training Program, Tyler
Junior College, 1400 E. Fifth St., Tyler, 75701.
