GTID PJs and Professional Development – Beaumont
Save the dates… Friday, December 7 – Saturday, December 8, 2012
GTID will be hosting a Silent Weekend event: PJs and Professional Development in Winnie, Texas, right off I-10, between Baytown and Beaumont.
Please join GTID, beginning at 6:00pm, Friday evening, through Saturday afternoon, as we wrap up around 12:00pm. This is a wonderful chance to mingle with peers and brush up those interpreting skills.
It’s not quite a lock-in, but participants are encouraged to bring sleeping bags/mats, pillows and slippers and sleep over. (If you need local hotel info, just ask.) More information is available on our website http://www.gtid.tsid.org/ or on our Facebook page…
Friday – participants, seeking mentoring, will have the opportunity of hands on practice, in the Mentor Modules, interpreting a variety of “work” venues. During the “work” portion, participant will receive feedback with regard to sign choice, errors in parameters and success of content delivery. Participants will continue rotating through four Skill Quest stations, Conceptual Accuracy, Expansion, Minimal Pairs and Classifiers, set up to target specific aspects of interpreting.
The night concludes with Interpreting Music; participants will be divided into small groups or pairs and discuss lyrics, meanings and appropriate word choices and sequencing. Part of the time will be “glossing” a piece of work.
0.6 BEI CEUs approved.
For those who just want to “silently” mix and mingle, there will be a variety of games (i.e., Scrabble, Apple to Apple, Phase 10, Uno, Payday, Taboo, Keep Quiet, Story Dice, Clue, etc.) available. A special table will be set up for members of the community and beginners, who would like to learn some basic signs or tips for signing (presented in ASL).
Saturday –a panel discussion, in the morning, to allow participants to discuss their experiences in the Mentor Modules and troubleshoot actual or perceived problems. Topics discussed may include:
introductions on the first day of school, placement of the interpreter in a small space, working with MLS clients, or something as simple as saying NO to a request. We will conclude the silent weekend with round table discussion for Community outreach and what the Interpreting community can do to bridge the gap, between the two worlds.
Expectations, Roles and Responsibilities of all parties may also be included.
