Texas School for the Deaf wins Gallaudet University Battle of the Books competition
Washington, D.C. – December 17, 2012 – Texas School for the Deaf (Austin, Texas) won Gallaudet University’s Battle of the Books national competition for deaf and hard of hearing middle school students held on the university’s Washington, D.C., campus December 8. Students were required to read four books, Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai, Breaking Stalin’s Nose by Eugene Yelchin, The House of Scorpion by Nancy Farmer, and answer multiple choice and short answer questions from the books.
The purpose of the Battle of the Books competition is to promote literacy among deaf and hard of hearing middle school students, promote a spirit of academic competition and good sportsmanship, and to encourage critical thinking skills.
Texas School for the Deaf provides direct educational services to students, from birth through 21, who are deaf or hard of hearing and who may have multiple disabilities. The school also serves as a statewide educational resource center on deafness, providing educational services to families, students, programs and professionals who work with the deaf and hard of hearing community. The students involved in the Battle of the Books competition were: Damon Rush, Malvana Ramborger, and Lydia Kopp, and chaperone Oscar Ocuto. The team received a plaque to place in their school and individual trophies.
