This week marks Deaf Awareness Week, and one school in Austin celebrated with a special guest.
On Wednesday, Frank R. Turk visited the Texas School for the Deaf. Turk is known as “The Father of Deaf Youth in America.”
The day kicked off with an assembly of high school and middle school students, followed by a pep rally with dozens of student athletes.
Turk told the students about his days as an athlete when he was in school. He encouraged athletes to uphold important values such as playing as a team and being a buddy instead of a bully.
“Make a friend, don’t let them bully. You need to feel responsible, you need to feel accountable,” Turk said. “You need to help the school. You need to combat bullying. You need to own that. Don’t be a bully.”
The festivities for Deaf Awareness Week continue Thursday with tours at the Texas School of the Deaf Heritage Center Museum.
The public is also invited to attend the varsity football game Friday at 7 PM.
