Workshop (part 1) title:
Triage to the OR: A Medical Interpreting Journey
Presenter: Doug Dittfurth, MEd – Texas BEI III/CIC
deSign and Consulting Services/Austin, TX
Date: 09/14/2019
Time: 10am-4pm
.5 CEUs (BEI) APPROVED (No RID CEUs offered for this workshop)
Narrative:
The interpreter attending to a need in an emergency department oftentimes does not know what to expect. Even if told by the agency, miscommunication between the patient and the healthcare provider at intake can skew the presumed process. In order to help ensure qualifying for the need, knowledge of medical terminology and medical protocol is necessary.
The presenter has interpreted in mostly medical scenarios since first being certified by the Texas Society of Interpreters for Deaf (TSID) in 1981. Siblings being in the medical field assisted in his acquiring knowledge prior to his current marriage to Leslie, who has worked in both emergency medical services as a paramedic and in emergency departments.
Learner Outcomes
The learner will:
- become familiar with blood loss and how it can appear to be more severe than is in reality;
- become familiar with basic root, prefix and suffix related to understanding medical terminology which are often based on Latin and Greek languages; and
- become familiar with regular emergency department procedures and protocols.
This 5.0 hour interactive workshop will allow questions and dialogue during the power-point driven presentation.
