DEAF AUTHORS BOOK FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 25 AUTHORS

Austin, Texas – The Deaf Authors Book Festival (DABF) has confirmed 25 authors to present their works at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD), May 6-7, 2022, free to the public.

The first ever national DABF event brings a diverse group of deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, LGBTQ+, and BIPOC authors from various genres certain to resonate with deaf culture and history buffs, sci-fi geeks, sports fanatics, comic book lovers, and poetic enthusiasts.

From all over the United States, authors from Hawaii to Minnesota and Florida, include:

  • Dr. Harry G. Lang, is professor emeritus of National Technical Institute for the Deaf at Rochester Institute of Technology, with two books, one about those who were deaf in the American civil war, and another which follows the interesting history of the use of captions, from silent films to movies, television, and online videos.
  • Dr. Irene W. Leigh, one of the four co-authors with an exciting new book on deaf culture that explores education, psychology, cultural studies, technology, and the arts.
  • A versatile writer, author and playwright, Raymond Luczak, has written 23 books and produced more than 20 plays. His newest book is an elegy to his lost twin.
  • David H. Pierce, a nationally recognized cartoonist, will debut his extensive collection of “Old Fogeys” comics.

To inspire the next wave of young and aspiring writers, DABF co-host and producer, Dr. Steve Baldwin, believes strongly this gathering of nationally known writers will do just that.

“Among the 25 authors, says Baldwin, four have released new books just this year.”

Acknowledging the thoughtful representation of diverse authors from different backgrounds, Baldwin’s co-host, and TSD Superintendent, Claire Bugen, says “I am excited about this opportunity to celebrate the successes of these Deaf authors who are role models for the students and staff at TSD.”

Humanities Texas and the Greater Austin Foundation for the Deaf are among the sponsors and corporate donors who are making this historic literary event possible.
