Course Descriptions:

Level I (Introductory)
Interpreting in a mental health setting is arguably the most challenging setting for sign language interpreters. This workshop provides the beginning interpreter with techniques specific to mental health settings as they intersect with educational settings. We will cover interpreting disordered form, applying the RID Code of Professional Conduct, and coping with transference and countertransference issues with a focus on emotional issues, both intra- and inter-psychic, that a mental health setting can bring to the fore.

Level II (Advanced)
Delve into the intersection of mental health with other interpreting settings. We will cover Demand-Control schema, operating within Role Space, as well as ethical and effective decision making. Participants will explore how language disorders can be compounded by medication, etiology of deafness, language deprivation, and fund of knowledge. We will also focus on communication assessment, trauma-informed care, and legal considerations for mental health work.
