November 3-5, 2023.

Registration ranges from $25 for one day (plus meals) to $100 all inclusive for five meals

Three tracks:

  • I. Deaf Certified Lay Servant, Basic or Advanced (10 hours, Fri/Sat)
  • II. Deaf Ministry and Mission Workshops (2 hrs each, Fri and/or Sat)
  • III. Weddings, Funerals, and Sermons: Interpreting Christian Content (.5 CEU’s pending).

Special guest presenters: Rev. Dr. Kirk VanGilder, Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy, Gallaudet University; Rev. Dr. Gio Arroyo, General Secretary of the Commission of Race and Religion. Interpreter workshop is led by Peggy Cobb, MS, BEI Master, Court, RID CI & CT.

Workshop topics:

  • United Methodist Church Leadership 101, (2 hours) Presented by Rev. Leo Yates and Mary Ann Deters This workshop presents typical UMC leadership committees from the local church to the annual conference, better enabling persons to consider participating in leadership roles.
  • Pastoral Care 101, Presented by Rev. Leo Yates and Mary Ann Deters (2 hours)
  • Jesus emphasized the importance of compassion. In this workshop, participants will receive an overview of pastoral care and some techniques to provide care and compassion to others in their church and community.
  • Global and Local Mission leadership – (2 hours, Friday, or Saturday) Rev. Dr. Kirk VanGilder, Associate Professor of Religion and Philosophy at Gallaudet University, Kirk has expertise in Deaf mission abroad (Zimbabwe, Kenya, Turkey) and locally.
  • Finding your Spiritual Gifts (2 hours, Friday, or Saturday). Rev. Dr. Kirk VanGilder An ordained elder in the Baltimore Washington Conference, Kirk has led workshops on helping Deaf discover their spiritual gifts for lay ministry.
  • Demystifying the Bible – (2 hours, Friday, or Saturday) – Rev. Dr. Tom Hudspeth How do we read the Bible, what did the Bible mean to the first people who heard or read the scriptures? What does the Bible say to us today? For anyone who wants to know more about the Bible.

4:30pm-5:30pm: UMCD Jurisdictional business meetings (NEJ, SEJ, SCJ, NCJ, WJ)

6pm: Keynote Dinner at Walnut Hill, Rev. Dr. Kirk Van Gilder “Ministry of All Believers”
8:30pm and 9pm: Shuttle for guests at Embassy Suites

Saturday, November 4, 2023:

Sunday, November 5, 2023 (CHANGE time, fall back one hour!) ALL SAINTS DAY

6:30am-8am: Breakfast for Embassy Suites guests (8am and 8:30am shuttle to Walnut Hill Church)
9am: Gather at Walnut Hill Church (those leaving by plane today bring luggage)
9:30am-10:30am: Deaf worship livestream at 9:30am. Certified Lay Servants will be given opportunity to help lead worship at 9:30am and 11am services. Remember those UMCD members who died since our last UMCD meeting in 2018.
11am: Interpreted worship at Walnut Hill Church and CrossWalk at Lovers Lane UMC
12:15pm: Boxed lunches to go, shuttle & rides to airports.

Peggy Cobb: Instructor, Tarrant County College Interpreter program, RID CI & CT, BEI Master & Court certified. M.S. in ASL/English Interpreting Pedagogy. ASL / English Interpreting Instructor | Communications & Fine Arts, Tarrant County College Trinity River Campus, Ft. Worth, Texas.

Mary Ann Deters: Deaf. President, Southeastern Jurisdiction of UMCD and grants chair for the United Methodist Committee on Deaf and Hard of Hearing Ministries. Member of St. Andrew UMC, Florida

Rev. Dr. Tom Hudspeth: Hard of Hearing. Pastor of Care and Deaf Ministries, Walnut Hill Church, A Ministry of Lovers Lane UMC, Dallas, Texas, and Consultant for the UM-DHM.

Karen Miller: Deaf. Certified Lay Minister in the Peninsula-Delaware Annual Conference. Karen is the president of the Northeast Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Congress of the Deaf.

Carol Stevens: Hearing. Retired ASL Interpreter from the Baltimore, Maryland area and mission leader of 17 teams to Deaf Africa.

UMCD dues paid membership may qualify for scholarships to assist out of town guests staying overnight. All UMC related scholarships are available on first registered, first dues paid basis.
